hey guys, I'm a complete newbie to creating websites. I'm trying to learn as I go and just started with a free hosted page so far and will build on that later :O)

Can someone help me on explaining the 'keywords' everyone is talking about?
How do I get them listed with reference to a google listing? Do I embed them in my webpage as meta tags or do i have to include them in a site submission to google somewhere?

I already filled in the google page to list a new url a couple days back, but I hear that it could take weeks or months to show up in any search results. Seems odd. I remember a number of years back looking into this and it was way easier to get listed then, without even trying! One would think the internet would be progressing but it seems to be regressing in some ways.

thanks for any advice!
Alan

No and absolutely NO!

Key words/phrases are simply terms that users would be entering into search engines to locate pages that are about their chosen subject.

You do your research to find ones that match the product or service you are selling, then build pages and write content to suit.

thanks for the reply, chrishirst.
So I guess I have to just rely on google to 'find' the keywords within my pages itself?
I have lots of ideas to build out content so will try to figure out how the two are linked - content and search engine results.
cheers!

Don't worry on that score, Google is more than capable of sorting out what terms a page should appear for without it being made blatantly obvious. In fact the less blatant your page is the better it will do.
