I think comments are good. They add content and additional keywords. The key is to delete the spam and comments like "good post".

Are there tags to restrict the comment crawling of the area below a post if so?
that's why most of the blogs are nofollow and moderated to avoid unwanted links.

Depends on the quality of the comments. Some can hurt while others can benefit your site.

yes that's possible that's why most of the owners are using dofollow attribute for the robots to disregard the relationship of the linking site to your website.

Does anybody on this thread realize how wrong they are?

If comments hurt your SEO, then the most popular blogs would never show up in a search result. The opposite happens. The most popular blogs receive the most comments and get good rankings in search results.

Seriously, stop and think for just a moment.

For an example, take a look at Steve Yegge's or Jeff Attwood's blog. The comments don't hurt his search rankings at all.

i agree with you., if your site contains so many unrelated comments, your keyword density will lose percentages that's why it can harm on your SITE SEO.

The comments which enhance your page information and create some kind of discussion then I think it will not harm your content. So try to moderate those comments which are good to discuses or can say which you like to give a reply. If you think that the links on comments may harm your ranking then you can do no follow comments on your blog.
