I have been doing a lot of seo lately, but I am curious about one thing I can't seem to find a straight answer on. On a blog, does "comments" harm any part of the seo of an article.

Are there tags to restrict the comment crawling of the area below a post if so?

Comments reduce the relative frequency of keywords on the page.
Comments allow the possibility of someone causing your page to be about casinos, or insurance, or whatever they comment.

You need good comment moderation (approval or frequent reviews) if you are going to allow permanent-lasting comments on your blog or site.

I would be shocked if search engines didn't take everything south of "N Comments" with a grain of salt.

In reducing the frequency of keywords on a page as comments do I guess you can say they do cause harm to a certain extent.

Ok, Ok, lets forget the "keyword density" and "do follow" crap please.

If the comments are made by REAL, INTERESTED, USERS rather than half-witted link spammers, they can could do a lot of good, as they will very likely be using the same phrases and words that REAL people use when looking for whatever your page is about.

The time wasting "Nice post/article/page/thread etc I am interesting to this" kind of comments aren't even worth leaving or making live!

One of the sites I looked after a few years ago had one page that had a average conversion rate in excess of 50% on SE referral visitors because the page was found for a product review that contained the phrase they had been searching for.

^^True, some blog owners doesn't really like some sort of spammers and what they do is they'd report you to your host and that is certainly something that wont be good for you.

That is the key.. a good comment will help.. a bad comment will hurt. It is all about the quality of the comment (as it is about the quality of your content). If you are properly moderating comments, then I dont imagine they could do any real harm.

Comments are good. It gives you fresh new content on your site which se's like. Some moderation is required though, as it seems spamming can be automated these days.

Oh and did I mention, that it also means people are interested enough in what you have to say, that they bother to comment?

i have to agree here. google must be smart enough to distinguish between a site and a blog and which is the site content and which is the visitor generated content/comments.

i dont think they hurt your blog seo, in fact i think they even help generate fresh content to your site. and google LOVES fresh content

On my Opinion, Blog posting is not harmful if you post to the relevant topic. Means which topic is related to your niche. You can post there.
But try to post good comments. It shouldn't like spam.

if the comments are related to your post then it can be helpful in search engines but there are many loyal commentors too who use their site (unrelated site) link while commenting, so that would bring negative effect and u can't ignore too
