It is not necessary for ranking but usability point of view it is necessary. If a person search on search engines for your site, a descriptions is shown by meta tag descriptions.

I hear arguments on both sides of the fence on the issue of metatags; some still swear they are necessary and others swear that they aren't. I figure it only takes a minute to add them so why not? It certainly won't hurt your site and as swity mentioned, it may help for the people reading the descriptions and deciding which site to visit.

The meta keyword and meta description tags are two different things.

meta keyword tag is useless. It's not going to improve how well a page ranks. The only thing it really does is makes it easier for your competition know what keywords you're targeting.

meta description can be a useful way to entice clicks when your page does show up in results. It won't always be the description that shows. It's one of several possible things that will show as the snippet below your link. I think it is worth writing, though I often see people think you're better to just let search engines pick random words off your page to better match the query.

I usually try to make the first sentence of my meta-description as concise as possible, since it sometimes displays only partially. Without a meta description, the results definitely don't display as well. Therefore I'm a big fan of it.

For some reason I still add meta-keywords as well. It's not because I think it does anything. Maybe someday in the future it will mean something. I doubt it, but it's whatever. We use it as a way to get clients to think about the content on the page, to think about keywords.

I usually take a chunk of text from the article, which works pretty well. I don't bother with the keywords. I prefer to focus on page title.

Hi,
Title tag and description is most important tags in on page optimization and keywords tag also the part of on page optimization but if you don't want to use keywords tag remove this from the tag list.
Every one knows that if we don't put the description tag in website the search engine automatically take the first 2 and half lines for description which shown in search results for describing the website and also high lighted the keywords in description.
So why not we use a proper keywords rich description tag for our website and getting top position.

Sorry but this isn't true.
Google can take the snippet form anywhere on the page, whether it be the 1st two and a half lines (how many characters would that be then?) or a selection of text from the page relevent to the search term. Just because you have a description doesn't mean Google will automatically use it.

Explicitly Meta tags won't add any value to your SEO, but as a whole with other optimization methods, it will add more value.

Many said that meta tags doesn't play anymore a big role in seo. maybe it's true but i still prefer for the basic methods. everytime i optimize a site, i always include some meta tags. i give more importance on the title and description. but if you really want to rank and get more organic traffic, all you have to do is build links... quality links.
