Hi
My website seems to have lost page rank and seriously lost Google position. I have looked at my back links to my homepage and I did have about 900, many of them from great places like Yahoo. Now I have 67, still a few from Yahoo but most from within my own site.
Why would all these back links disappear?

Confused!

Regards

Tim

Wrong thread Abel

It's what's known as "54!T happens"! And it occurs more often when you concentrate on backlinks and Google downgrade a few pages.

Dear chrishirst

Thanks for replying to this post. We have not approached the back link issue at all. Up until recently we had 900 or more and now only 60 or so. Admittedly we do not have a sitemap so this is possibly what has caused the problem.

Do we need to actually submit the site/sitemap to Google, I have heard it is best to wait for Google to find it.

Regards

Tim

Best way is to totally ignore the imaginary number that is returned using the link:siteURI command. It has been useless for years and isn't about to get any better.

A XML Sitemap is to assist with crawling issues and if you don't have any of those, it won't make a bit of difference whether you have one or not.

Check your traffic and conversions. THAT is what means something. Not imaginary values such as;
Backlink counts, SERP position for some phrase or other, or what the pointless green bar shows.

Hi ChrisHirst

Thanks for this frank opinion. I share your opinion that traffic and conversions are what count rather than imaginary stuff. However, as you will have seen in my other thread on traffic I have lost tons of traffic recently.

I have done an HTML analysis of the home and other pages and found lots of errors (it was not me honest!) and am of the opinion that this has lead to the initiation of our problem.

We need to embark on a process of optimising our site for our customers to achieve greater traffic, and this is ongoing, it is just that losing all our income overnight isa shock.

Rgds

Validation errors, unless they make it so the page won't even load, won't give the SEs a moments problem.

relying on free search is NEVER a good idea.

I have been using different tools to measure up my backlinks and they have been showing some different results. Some tools suggest that I retain my backlinks and some say that I have lost a huge amount of them. I am not experiencing any drop in SERP though.

Don't use backlinks checking tools? Instead of that follow Google WebMaster Tools. You will get a clear picture of the backlinks.
