Submitting your site to search engines such as google is a wise thing to do as you can submit a xml Sitemap. Your sitemap will tell google exactly how many pages you have. It will also give you information on error pages and pages with short meta descriptions. However this can be a long process and the best way to get into search engines is to let them find you themselves. This is done when the robots follow links on other websites. So building links is the most effective way.
I would recommend downloading the NoDoFollow toolbar for mozilla firefox. Its useful and you will know when a site is using the nofollow tag.

Good call. This definitely should be a great way to start for people, because the more junk you have on your page, the more Google has to run through will determine your placement as well. Why do you think so many sites have their code in such finely compacted and placed in such systematic ways? All of these things weigh SEO
