How to promote my website

Hello All,
I am looking for ways in which i can promote my website http://www.philscomputerrepair.com
I have tried a few things such as press releases and I have been working on building links, I have submitted to a good number of directories, but it seems like i only get a few visitors here and there and most of them come from forums. Is there something that I am doing wrong? I really need some advice, I have been trying to promote it as much as possible, but it doesn't seem like anything is working. Your advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank You

you seem to be promoting your website in lots of places. You should maybe focus on your rankings. What is your % of visitors ? (Direct traffic, referring sites and search engines)

When I look at Google Analytics I see that Direct Traffic is 17% Referring sites is 73% and search engine traffic is 9%. It seems like I only get hits when I post things on forums and even then I only receive about 5 to 10 hits and then it slacks off to about 3 or 4 for the next 2 days and then no hits at all. Is there anything that you can recommend? Thank you again for your help.

That's what I thought.
And that's why I said in my previous answer, it's now time to focus on your rankings.
You've done your homework with referring sites, now optimize your website.
If you have optimized your website and you are not still not showing up, try to target less competitive keywords. Build your way up the ladder of rankings

Thank you very much, I will work on optimizing my website for SEO and will also try less competitive keywords, I guess once it is optimized for SEO the keywords will change as well. i use met tags, but i know that most search engines dont use them anymore including Google, is there any certian way to get hits on google? Maybe by putting your keywords in the first few lines of your website? Thanks again for your help

Google still uses meta tags. They just don't use parts of it like the keyword tag.

You are going to have to do more then putting your keywords in the first few lines of your website to get hits from Google. Do some reading and then ask some questions about what you don't understand,

These are only some random thoughts that occurred to me, so take them for what they're worth. But you might want to focus on the user experience a little bit?
From the domain name, I sort of expected to see a mom & pop style computer repair business. The kind where I'd bring my computer in, you'd fix it, and then I'd pay you.
Instead, from the front page, it looks like it's a web site about link exchange? There's nothing, nada, zilch, about link exchanges that help end users. If you're going to participate in them, at least, don't make them get in the way of the user experience. Because people tend to recommend to each other things that they found useful. If you want to participate in word of mouth (also known as "free") advertising, you need to get people to like your site so much that they'll want to recommend it to other people.
Why are you advising people to download FireFox (and other software) from FileHippo? I don't mean for this to sound insulting, and I'm worried it might - but don't you think it's a little ironic to ask people to download and install executable software (they may never have heard of before) from a (probably) unknown host - on the same page you're warning people about viruses, trojans, and malware?
Anyway, talk is cheap, and you get what you pay for - but those are the first things I'd change if I wanted to improve the traffic and reduce the bounce rate. The second thing I'd do is get rid of that giant Stumble Me! banner in the middle of the home page. Again, it does nothing for the user.

I do run a small business where I do computer repair, maybe I choose a bad domain name, I wanted it to serve as a site that users could go to learn how to do computer maintenance themselves.

You have a very good point here, the only reason that I put links on my main page was because I have submitted to a few directories that required you to put their link on your home page, I will remove this as well as the stumble me banner.

I don't take it as insulting at all, I would rather know what everyone really thinks so that I can improve my website. The reason that I have the links there is because I wanted my website to be a central location for information on how to protect your computer as well as tell them where to get the tools. Is there a better way that you can think of for me to do this without linking out to file hippo?

Or, maybe you chose a great domain name, and want to think about integrating your site and business? I can see a few ways that might help you, but then, you know the most about your own business. What I'm thinking is, this - Could land you new customers, people in your area who want to do X, find you Googling about it, decide not to do it themselves, but see your contact info?
- Get you more trust, establish your experience and knowledge with computers in general? I need to learn how to install Oracle, you have an article that walked me through it, step by step, so I book marked it. But now that I need to install java, I see you don't have an article for that, but maybe you can do this as a paid job? (Example)
- Foster good will in general for your business.

Well, if the directories are serving your interests, leave them. But I really doubt they're helping you in any way - and I think the smartest web marketers ( none of who would ever call themselves that) would agree. If you've got a decent analytics package, you can see how many people come to your site through various directories, and, ideally, how many of them go on to "convert". In general, nobody uses directories to find sites they want - search engines fill this need.

What is File Hippo, specifically? I'm guessing it's a file hosting service. You could, if you wanted to, infect the setup.exe with a virus, then host that for the world to catch. That's the main reason I'm instinctively wary when I see this kind of thing, and the main reason I'd suggest not even taking on the responsibility to host the files yourself. ( More on that in a minute.)
What you should do, is sign up for AdSense, and then distribute FireFox directly from Google's server. They'll pay you $1 for every download ( or, probably, for every install), because it comes with their toolbar already installed. Frees you up from having to download new versions ( FF3), and gets you paid. Very common and legit.
That's the other main reason. When a new version comes out, if you have a link to the download or product info page on the site of the company that makes the product, your link is still valid, no (re)work required on your part. For just FireFox, it won't be much work anyway, but if you decide to set up a page for "software you ought to have" which can get pretty long and comprehensive ( but maybe pull in more search traffic, esp long tail, esp down the line as you acquire trust and authority) you'll want to do everything in your power to prevent yourself from getting chained to the computer.

I think this is a great idea, This was the initial reason that I put this website up, moreless a place that people could go to enable me to do remote support, I have since redesigned it and I wanted to leave it a mix of both, but then I started to think that I would have a better tuurn out as far as traffic if I geared it towards showing people how to maintain their computer and build off of that.

I agree with you, I have since removed the link to the directory, and I have not seen any traffic from any of the 30 some directories that I have submitted to, I was just following some steps to promoting my website.

Yep, Filehippo is a file hosting service, more less just a website that has a collection of utilities and software, I am not hosting any of my own files, and filehippo is a very credible site, but I do see why that could maake my site look not so appealing

I think that submissions to directories bring only backlinks and just little or no visitors...try to get organic traffic from search engines, is the one that is really important...targeted and many visitors

I think you're doing good. Optimizing your website will requires you to be patience. Results will not happen in just one snap of your finger. Try to do some on-page (e.i. meta tags and codes) and off-page optimization (article submission, web directory submission, forum posting, social bookmarking and many more). Just be patience, resourceful and hardworking... it will soon pay-off.

It's been a while since I've looked at how to earn $1 from Google for each FireFox download. I'll see what I can dig up. You might want to have a look in the AdSense forum, in case someone else can find the info before I can.
You mentioned wanting to integrate your site ( and sharing general info) with your business, and also the concern that it might not be the best idea. Maybe it could turn people away from the site, or be too distracting, or any number of other concerns. On that note, and I'm stepping into territory others ( VanGogh, Julien, ChrisH, etc) can give you better and more specific info on. But on questions like these, I'd be especially wary of taking advice from most people on these forums ( because easy money attracts a lot of lazy, not especially intelligent people). Still listen to advice, but make up your mind based on carefully controled tests.
