by default most blogs are nofollow in the comments section, however if you look hard enough you will find blogs that dont do this. If you add your keyword as your name, it will help, but make sure you write a good paragraph of text to reply to a comment and also dont go doing it 100 times a week, just comment on a few on topic blogs each week and link back to pages within your site that further explain your comment. this will improve you approval rate with the blog owners, i have about 40 blogs in a network and i get tons of comments, i would say about 70% of them are for seo which i only publish if its on topic, you can tell a spammer comment a mile away.

Totally agree. Comment on blogs that you have some useful info to add to the conversation

Nothing more annoying than getting me too comments submitted on my blogs

I tend to let comments that are on topic and add to my content display even if they are using their keywords as the name

I feel if they are adding useful content to my blog, then I really am not going to begrudge them a backlink

If what your saying is true then your basically telling 90% of this forums members not to bother posting replies to peoples questions. lets face facts, the only reason 90% of this and every other webmaster/seo forum has members that contribute is because the contributing member gets another sig link
Do you really think people care about their e-peen?

I think that's a fair assessment

Nice list, Cool site, I have no idea (though that could be pretty accurate as a statement rather than an opinion), get more links are not usually helpful to the thread starter.
Neither is copy and pasting bits of posts from other forums.

That will do a couple of things
  1. Get you your very own listing in the spam blockers. When people do this on my blog, leave obvious SEO keywords in the name field, I make it as spam (with Akismet) without bothering to read the crappy "comment" they left. I don't mind pseudonyms, nicknames, what have you, but if a person makes it obvious they're spamming, I'll have no part of it. Pretty soon, all the time you put into spamming will get you nothing at all, since your comments will wind up being flagged and removed from the queue.
  2. The blogs that wind up posting your comments will start showing up in the SERPs for your keywords.

I'm with niche on this, OK i can understand the usual garbage "nice list" "cool site" etc goes right in the bin were it belongs, but genuine content deserves a backlink.

as for nofollow! google follows them anyway but Shh, we aren't supposed to know that

yes it helps a lot specially if it is index by google and the blog that you place a comment is related to your site.

I only comment on blogs when I have something to add or say. I contribute to the blog first, then get a backlink. I approve any comments that contribute to my blogs. If you say "nice blog", I'll delete it.

Putting your keywords as your name? I think that's a bad idea. Maybe it will help (I think) but if someone saw that you've putted your KWs in the field name instead of your name... maybe they will treat your comment as a spam. The owner of the blog that you've been posted a comment will remove your comment and maybe some will be unhappy to see your site and instead of gaining traffic and links... you'll end up with nothing.

I don't think that its necessarily true. Many just want to share ideas and learn more about our field. Yes backlinks are nice, but only permanent backlinks are really important and you can only fit so many, so why stick around here for a limited number of backlinks?

I will be the first to admit. There may be a text file on my computer with about 35+ forums that I am a member of with about 5 posts each that ARE for the backlinks, however I am proud to say that I am not here for the backlinks. Also many of the forums that I use for backlinks are actually forums I have been a member of for years that I needed a question answered or something. So there I have my profile already indexed with some age. Free backlink, and it was legit content for the forum way back when I made my posts.
