I just noticed that for the term "free it support" my site is ranked #3 in the natural rankings out 143,000,000

And for "free pc support" it is ranked #1 on Google UK

how cool is that and I have never done anything to try and get it their either

Probably your site is new so it ranks well. New sites have good position for a short time, several weeks or so

Thats pretty good does it get you many hits though ?

you are on the first page (#8) of google (.com) for "free it support" in Vancouver as well.

(not for free pc suport though)

Well I'm just going to p*** on Techmonkeys chips

For a phrase, the raw numbers you see in the SERPs don't mean the number of competing pages, it means the number of pages that are returned for the combination of the words, so 143,000,000 pages have "it", "support" and "free" in some combination or other.

So what traffic does that actual phrase get? and does any of it convert?

Does you experience it recently? Better to keep adding new contents for bots to fetch.

Ah yes new content is added every day as it is a forum so no problems there.

As for conversions I would say yes a lot of it does convert, but I think most people come accross my site as it linked in some well respected places like Trend Micro's HiJackthis page which is nice.

To be honest though at the moment it doesnt mean a lot as I have no advertising and the site generates no cash. Was just pleased I ranked highly

This is all going to change though as my site should be relaunched with a new design next weekend, which knowing my luck will screw over my ranking lol

I do have some back links on some very reputable related websites so I think that is how must be happening at the moment

However I found out one of the reputable sites I was on is closing down.... Nooooo

sometimes being on the top spot is not enough, it doesn't make sense if it cannot drive traffic to your site!

very true, however I am not trying to get traffic at the moment and will be agressivley marketing my site again once my re-development work is complete cos at the moment the site is Fugly
