When is the content of a header tag too much?

I use the tag once at the head of the page with about 35 words between the opening and closing tags.

it's too much content in the header when it looks ugly and awkward on your website, and when it doesn't look natural to users.
that's all you need to worry about

Are you talking about a <div> that is being used as a header, or the <head> tag?

Ok so a heading element then.

35 words as a heading sounds somewhat dubious and probably looks like crap on the page.

bots won't care of course, but real people may.

As a general rule, I think header elements should be short and to the point, basically short titles. As chrishirst said, bots won't care, but too many words in a h1 element won't be too appealing to a person.

Try thinking of H1 tags as titles of chapters in a book.. How long are 'most' chapter titles?? I think that you would be hard pressed to find one 35 words long

Your title should be relevant to your content. It should be either 1 word (your main keyword) or more words. I would choose not more than 60 characters

Totally agree, I also try to keep it under 60 characters. Same for page titles or H1 H2 headings

You just need to include important keywords in your title tag. Title tag length should be 69 characters in the case of google consideration. If it exceeds 69 then google will ignore it.

Oh the comments that are running through my mind on this, none of which are suitable for publication.

BUT in actual fact the title tag should NEVER EVER be more than SEVEN characters! Unless it's the closing tag "</title>" then it has to be eight characters
