I don't think you quite understood what Julien was saying. In the case of your site, which is more important to you, getting users that keep coming back to use your site or getting a PageRank number from Google?
I hope that your answer would be the first answer. Repeat users or visitors are going to come back, which means they're more likely to click on your ads (which I'm guessing you would consider important). A good way to get that kind of user (in your case, you would be trying to get people interested in music), is to exchange links with other sites about music because it would be more likely that those users would also become users of your site. That's called a relevant link exchange.
A PR link exchange scheme, however, won't deliver that type of user and what's more, it's essentially useless because it doesn't really help you jump up that much in the search engine rankings. Did you know that toolbar PageRank isn't the only factor in determining where your site ends up on a search engine results page? In fact, it's almost useless, especially since it only gets updated a few times a year but the search engine results can change by the minute. You might want to try reading this to discover a few of the other, more important, factors.
