Is there a practical way that we can help combat some of the misinformation about SEO/SEM that is so obviously going around? I know a lot of us answer questions, the same questions, over and over again, but is there more that can be done? I'm thinking something along the lines of Learning Newbie's stickied DB thread, at least in terms of this forum, but would love to have a discussion about other possibilities as well.

Hi VM,
I know I am no expert but...
A stickie for the "basics of SEO" o(if there is such a thing) wouldn't be a bad idea as it could answer a lot of the questions that constantly come up, although the stickie thats already there about Elements, tags, attributes & values that Chris put up doesn't seem to be getting read!
And it seems that the people who keep asking the questions and contributing the the misconceptions are very unwilling to change their thought process as seen in countless threads / posts and unfortunately they out number (like the alamo!) the few willing to take onboard new things and apply some common sense to what they are posting.
But it would be a good idea to come up with something and a stickie would be a good place to start, even if most of the people dont read it - if you only get a few taking things onboard it will help cut down on the nonsense posts which seem to keep coming up, although I would imagine a number of them are doing it for link drops and the like (intentionally posting crap to get lots of replies)
Does WMT have a blog? If their were a blog dedicated to the main areas of misconception towards SEO (if done right it could be huge, just a place for SEO and merketing), with no nonsense, no daft posts diluting the quality information, with common sense SEO and marketing material on it that WMT could point to as I dont think they would point to a blog owned by someone else
- or, a downloadable definitive guide detailing SEO and marketing “basics” or something defining popular misconceptions - if people are going to take the time to download the PDF its likely they will at least look at it and it could be something WMT offer that other forums dont (I know there are tons of downloadable PDF's around but this could be branded for WMT members)
that’s my 2 cents anyway and all I can think of at the moment, for what its worth

There will always be people distributing inaccurate information whatever the subject
I think people using this information have some responsibility to test things and cross check with other sources

It's a good idea to start a post that would describe the "basics of SEO".
At the same time I think some people are just lazy. Most questions have been numerously answered on this forum.
So why don't people try searching for answers instead of asking the same ones?
Of course SEO gurus will be soon bored to answer the same questions

To be honest there's some great "Sticky's" already in this forum but most people who join don't bother to take the time to read them before posting up their questions. That's what keeps the Moderators busy popping tranquilizers and drinking beer down at the pub to calm their rattled nerves.
Occasionally it's fun to sign in under false names like "Vasity27" and ask questions like "will I be penalized if I duplicate the same web site 100 times put them all on the same server and interlink them, then submit the site to Google 100 times a day for 6 months then use hidden text on all the pages and will you please link back to me from your home page but only if it's a PR7?"
Then I like to follow up the post with something subtle like "Stop treating me like I'm stupid Chrishurst!"
It keeps them on their toes. Otherwise they get bored with so little to do around here...

Doesn't seem to be working though for so very many "SEOs".

That's a good idea, unfortunately it isn't really possible with the current forum setup. I would love it if such a quiz was a prerequisite for posting in the SEO forum, though...

There wasn't any information shared, kanchan. Ironically, this thread is about how to get people to read before posting.
