I've just been reading up on how the SE's can ban your site if they find duplicate pages. This has got me a little bit worried, because I have several almost-duplicate pages on my site, out of necessity.

My pages are written in British English with alternatives in American English. This sometimes makes a big difference because the technical musical terms I use are completely different (e.g. a "crotchet" in British is a "quarter note" in American). On some pages I have used both terms together, but on some pages it gets really cumbersome and so I put an alternative page up for the US terms. An example is here http://www.mymusictheory.com/grade1/...mes_notes.html with a link to the US page at the top.

So how different does a page need to be in Google's eyes?

Do you think I am at risk of getting banned doing this? On some pages there is virtually no difference in the text, as the terms show up in images. Would having different images count as being a different web page? (I doubt it!)

Any thoughts?

I'd suggest you don't read there ever again.

Depends on what you have as alt attribute text.
