Hey all,

I am starting this thread out of curiousity more than anything, but I also think this is a very important aspect of internet success that is rarely discussed. I would like to compile this information and include it on my website in a future article...any and all participation is greatly appreciated. Please just fill in your breif (or detailed if you feel like it) answers to the questions below:

1) How much time each week do you spend on the following tasks for AN INDIVIDUAL WEBSITE:
  • Posting in forums or community sites
  • Writing and submitting articles
  • Writing and submitting press releases
  • Pursuing reciprical linking relationships
  • Submitting to web directories
  • Blogging
  • Posting to social networking sites
  • Adding content to your site
2) How long have you been developing/branding this website?

3) How much traffic does this website see on a monthly basis?

I might think of more questions to add later, but I am tapped out for now. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to share.

Thanks in advance for your involvment.

I am curious to see what everyone comes back with!

I can't give you an actual time for each item on your list since it really varies from week to week. Some weeks I have so much client work in front of me I don't get to spend much time promoting my site. Other weeks might be slow in which case I'll spend a lot more time on some of those activities.

I tend to post to forums and community sites a lot, though not because I think it has any great direct seo benefit. I just like the community and the friends I make. To me it's more promotion than seo in that I'm building a brand in places outside of my site. Clients have found there way to me because they found something I said in a forum post which eventually led them to contact me.

I blog regularly, though I haven't been able to post as regularly as I'd like lately. That's generally how I add content to my site, though on occasion I may add a new sales page or remove an old one. I have some ideas for things that I may create outside the blog, though they'll fit fine on the blog too.

I post to social sites that I enjoy. Again it's not for seo so much as it is because I simply enjoy the sites and the communities. Any seo benefit is more indirect in that participation can help build relationships with people who may later link to my site or recommend me to others. I generally don't submit my own content to social sites.

With a brand new site I'll submit to a few general and a few topical directories, but beyond that I tend not to do much. Most directories are pretty useless IMO and I doubt search engines would place much value on the links. I'll still submit a site to some directories that I think have some value.

I haven't written any press releases, because I don't really think my sites have done anything so newsworthy. Maybe I underestimate myself, but to me most of the things people submit to press release sites don't seem press worthy.

The amount of time I put into reciprocal linking is exactly 0.

actually, time management in SEO varies; depending on the PERSON who will optimize.

labour saving tip - buy clicks, don't waste time trying to get em for free. when you buy clicks you buy it on a conveyor belt, when you get em free, you are grafting every click yourself - even the conveyor belts you can get (eg a forum post which draws in clicks month after month) are slow, and almost 100% beyond your control.

It's interesting to get the different perspectives. Another question - in your ventures online, what activity do you think has had the greatest effect on your websites traffic and/or success?

Building a site that people actually want to visit. Apparently that's a strange concept to some given all the garbage you see online. It's always going to be easier to promote, optimize, market something good than something that isn't good.

The best thing you can do to be successful online and offline is have a business that serves a market. Off quality products that people want or provide services that leave people happy. With your site build content that people want to read and that makes them want to come back to read more.
