First, thanks for sharing your ideas upon backlinks from forums. I think, utilize signature place to get keywords ranking is possible, but a little. The most important is you should update and post new threads or comments frequently, then the search spider will craws your backlinks always and you will gain traffic and ranking !

For back link submit directory, article and press release and also link exchange, you can also get back link from forum signature but it's not necessary that you can get back link from every forum posting
I get about 200-300 times more traffic from only a handful of well-placed links in other parts of the web than I do from forums. Out of 300 visits to my website yesterday, only 1 of them was from here. Only 55 of them were from search-engines.

No, I build plugins for jQuery. The jQuery plugins site gets about 100,000 visitors per day, or so. I'm allowed to build links to my website to provide documentation, examples, and links to the latest code. This drives a lot of traffic to my site. It's not totally targeted, but some of it ends of looking at my portfolio, and it will probably bring me a really good client eventually. Plus, I make a little bit on the backend with Adsense.
