Start with onpage optimisation - target a different keyword(s) on each page and "sprinkle" these keywords in a "natural" fashion thru the title tag, h1-h6 tags, alt text, picture urls and content, also the hyperlinks. Then get incoming links - from a mix of directories, forums, blog comments, social bookmarking, srticles, press releases etc. Links from high pr or relevant sites are best. Vary the anchor text on the links.

Well, I've figured out the main keywords I want to use with my site, and it's working out okay. My main strategy is writing new articles that target the keywords. The nice thing about articles is that there is not limit to how many you write, or how often you link them to each other within the site.

In this order:

Research
First off, look at your competitors. What keywords are they targeting? Find out what search volume those keywords have. Start off picking some less-competitive long-tail keyword phrases

On Page
Place your keywords in your TITLE, META DESCRIPTION and H1 tags. Don't stuff, write legible English. Make sure your keywords are in the first paragraph of your content too.

Off Page
Build inbound links to your site, preferably with your keywords in the anchor text, and on good ranking pages that have content relevent to your site.

These are very brief over views but should get you started.

Can I make a suggestion to the Moderators? How about adding a basic SEO guide as a sticky at the top of this forum?

At least at first - focus on content the first 3 months and slowly optimize as you go...

I would say keyword research, meta description and keeping the urls to identify your keyword.

Say domain.com/forum/keyword1/keyword2 like that

I agree to an extent - content should always come first. But great content is next to useless if search engines can't understand your page. And that is really what SEO is all about, helping search engines understand what your page is about. A few OnPage techniques are vital for this.
