I agree that this is the best first step, although I prefer MS Excel. It definitely should not be your only keyword research step though. Just because you hadn't thought of it, it doesn't mean that some people are not using that phrase to search. Keyword research tools give you valuable insight into how other people use search engines. People may use different terminology or regional spelling. Some people may search short phrases while others use whole sentences. You need to research how your customers actually behave.

Note that there are lots of keywords which you could not even imaging that user can type in in search engines. Also if you want to digg deep into long tail keywords there is no other way to do research than to use such a service.

We use the same data sources as wordtracker does (dogpile and the same), so service is absolutely trustworthy.
