Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but do facebook links have a no follow, or can they count as backlinks?

What do you mean by the others, other social network groups? If so, forget myspace, they redirect all oif their links, and I don't know about twitter, haven't gotten around to using it, or linkedin

They're nofollow, but that doesn't mean you can't use Facebook to promote stuff. It's the same with Twitter.

I wouldn't rely as Facebook for promotion, because I use it just to talk to friends, not people I would want to market to.

But many people do use Facebook for promotion, and are very successful, so I don't think that the noFollow effects their aims.

Yes, they use it for REAL promotion, not cheap link-spam, which is why the links are nofollow. Not that I think Facebook is the best place to promote stuff, but where there's a will...

A good method for getting traffic from facebook is to create a profile with a picture of a very attractive model and join a social group preferably in a geographical area that makes sense to your site. Watch the friend requests come in, you don't even have to request yourself and then use it to promote your site.

even though facebook links are no follow, its benefit when it comes to traffic actually depends in your network. The larger you network the better.

Oddly, Facebook links have shown up in my Google Webmaster Tools control panel. I don't think Google is paying too much attention to "nofollow" these days.

Just because the links are shown it doesn't mean they "count"

Could be true, but I don't think Google would bother to show links that don't count - they only give part of the link picture anyhow, I don't think they'd bother even indexing nofollow links.

I guess we'll never know unless Google tell us EXACTLY how they deal with links.

I would never sneer at a link, nofollow or otherwise. FB worked for me in the past, got some traffic, generated some interest. Link showed up in Google, well that would be a nice bonus!

I have freinds who swear that creating a fan page on FB is a great way to drive traffic to sites...and of course, join as many FB groups as you can.
