Well. First optimize your pages and then I would recommend you start with directtory submission and even with article submission

If you're looking to build up backlinks to improve your positions in serps, then do a mix of relevant forum posts, relevant blog comments, directory submissions, social bookmarking, articles etc

Some social bookmarking sites such as stumbleupon will send traffic (probably not very targetted or interested in buying) but will not give you dofollow backlinks.

Your promotional methods could vary depending on your target market and your product.

firstly, get your SEO sorted, OnPage and OffPage. This ia a big subject area, do the research and get yourself indexed.

Secondly, if you're selling niche products, find out where your customers spend their time online. What blogs do they read, forums do they go to, communities they are a part of. Join these and promote your site through there. Don't spam - join in discussions, bring something to the table other than self-promotion.

Thirdly, consider a Google Adwords campaign. Figure out how much a lead is worth to you, then bid for positions based on that.

That should get you started.

Get the right and attractive design with quality content for your website, choose the right keywords and start building links through article and directory submission, forum postings to relevant sites, blog commenting, social bookmarking, etc. That would be a good start mate!
