I have an interesting situation (hopefully).
The work I do is unique and my site, basically, is a showcase for my work. I was recently commissioned to create something for a national sports celebrity. I have been granted permission to feature the ongoing project on my site, and that is my SEO dilemma.

If I set up a separate page for this project, how can my main page reap the SEO benefits? I have been contacted by ESPN and they want to do a story... as well as the Philadelphia Inquirer... this is a big break for me and it could reap huge SEO benefits, but I want all of the juice to go to my home page, not some secondary page on my site. I need to do this tastefully and respectfully.

Any suggestions on how to achieve this?

As far as the sports links are concerned, the secondary page is the important one.
I'd just make sure the secondary page links back to the home page and not worry about it.

If the page is popular enough, it'll help you whole domain.

Congrats on the big break, it should be great for you. If you set up a separate page, why would you want your main page to reap the benefits? If you know where your visitors are going to be coming from, tailor your your secondary page for those visitors. Then, if you need to, link to your home page from it. A lot of people mistakenly try to rank their home page for everything, but the trick is actually getting targeted traffic and knowing what to do with it. Figure out what action you want your visitors to take and then adjust the landing page accordingly. If you want, you can nofollow all other links other than the homepage.

With that much potential exposure why are you worrying about losing a bit of SEO benefit?
