All I could turn up on it was this:

"Some search engines allow you to specify the address of an XML Sitemap in your robots.txt file"

But Google and Yahoo both encourage you to tell them directly about the existence of your XML Sitemap anyway.

Your robots.txt file is meant more to tell the spiders what they shouldn't do rather than what they should. If you don't want particular files or directories crawled, you would indicate that in the robots.txt file. Note, however, that your competitors can also access it.

code optimization
Good use of image ALT tags
navigation links
Good internal linking structure
XML sitemap
Robots.txt file
content duplicacy
and much more

Images can also rank well in the image search and can give your site a good traffic if it rank at the top of the listings of the images.

Its a text file placed in the root directory of your site to tell most search engines what they can and cannnot crawl.
