I have a website that is only very small ( 4 pages ) and there isn't that much text on each page so I suppose SEO wouldn't be very effective with this website.

What other alternatives do I have? What is the most effective thing you have ever done to your website?

I think with that type of small page website, you should do social bookmarking of all your pages in lots of social bookmarking sites and you can also go for do-follow blog commenting and place all your 4 page links as much as possible.But the best suggestion is to add contents to your page and increase the page number of your site.

Participating in social networking sites (Myspace, Twitter, Facebook) can boost site traffic. Answering in Yahoo Answers is also a good strategy.

As was mentioned, I'd add more content to your site, but I just can't resist saying that you can do your own SEO fairly easily. Get a very basic SEO book from the library and have at it. You will get results with a little SEO effort.

Contrary to popular (and incorrect) belief, SEO WON'T get traffic to your site. Advertising is what gets traffic and visitors to a site (or a page)

what's the website? are you selling something? If so, figure out how much a lead is worth to you, then run a PPC campaign with Google, with your advertising bid being the same as the value of a lead.

Also you could try sending out a press release to relevant blogs and online magazines to stir up some interest.

participating in social media to bond with many fellow user and generate good traffic ...using social media interaction you will reach out to many other people on internet and may be generate potential customer..
classified ads will give your site needed visibility.

The best way is to do Advertising online & offline, Adwords and YPN are good options for you, if you cannot afford SEO.

I agree, social networking is a great way to drive traffic. You need software to do this on a large scale though. If your not using youtube do yourself a favor and promte your videos. Video marketing is where it's at!

if you want traffic then SMO is the best way to get that.
If you believe in investing then go for advertising and email marketing.

if you want traffic without SEO you can do several things at your own like you can do bookmarking of your site by using SB sites like digg, stumbleupon, facebook, twitter etc, u can comment on other do follow blogs relevant to your theme , you can create your own blog also. u can do profile listing, RSS feeds or alternatively u can also go for SEM search engine marketing & instantly boost your traffic.

Getting traffic from web2.0 sites also are proven to give quick results. Site like twitter and facebook can give a spark of traffic due to the number of members.

SEO can still give good traffic even if your site is small. Article marketing can still give traffic to it for a long time.

If you can afford SEO then do avertizing.Google ad words,PPC,SEM.

If you run a business you may consider advertising in google and yahoo. If not you can join niche forums and add signatures. Traffic creation with articles, classifieds and there are quite a lot of ways are there...
