If you wrote an article and sent it directly to a **good** site that used it in their newsletter that went out to, say, 100K+ subscribers and then archived it on their site forever, you get a backlink from a good site, you get a lot of visibility in front of their subscribers and visitors, and it didn't cost you a thing.
Yeah definitely, Article Marketing helps to increase the backlinks. It is a good technique to increase the backlinks.
However, those backlinks are pretty much useless. But then the "article marketers" generally don't produce anything of note, so why should they be rewarded with anything of value?
I still think forum posting is the best way to get your site out there, because people are able to see the true person who owns the site. They are able to make judgments on whether they think the person is actually worthy of having their time online.
But, article submission is a good way to get the link out there, if you place the link in some good key terms.
Yes! Article submission is most important thing and is still considered as best ever source to get links or traffic. You cannot get anything better, for free, than article directories and forum posting.
If you really provide good contents and make visitors to follow your link then you are sure to get huge traffic.
1) Directory Posting.
2) SE Submission.
3) Article Posting.
4) Forum Posting.
All good except 2. Never bother submitting to SEs. Especially not Google, you'll be waiting a long time... best thing to do is get links and install the Google webmaster tools, that'll get you indexed quicker.
As for articles, I've had great success with them personally. You can get good links from them, and sometimes they get picked up and used elsewhere, and will often contain your link again. I "spin" my articles and submit them to around 20 odd directories.

I think we disagree on the definition of "huge traffic".
Here at Rhapsody we manage to get a few million visitors daily with no "article marketing".

I believe that while writing and sharing articles you also get backlinks and if your article and the website where it is posted is good, then it might be a valuable contribution for your website's SEO.
Article writing is extremely important for SEO...if you put the article on your own site.
Stating the obvious, but with style!
Eventually this message may even get over to the masses of "experts" who think that giving away your hard work so that somebody else can earn adsense pennies off it is a "smart move"

As always, if you produce unique quality content, that article will end up getting forwarded via email, viral, forums, etc. The backlink from the article to your site may not have alot of juice, however the exposure is what ends up being important.
Writing articles will definitely help your SEO efforts. For example I use article submissions to get some backlinks and get some info what the website offers. But I leave my best articles for my own / clients site and market them. You can say I use article marketing as a "teaser" of what can be found on MY websites

Listen, if you regularly and consistently write good articles for your own site, and have an RSS feed, it won't be long before scraper sites will pick up your content. That's practically the same as submitting your site to an article directory, except you get the benefit of getting the ad revenue. If you scatter some self-referencing content (in a natural way) throughout your content, you'll get the backlinks as well.
