It seems like everyday there are conflicting reports on whether link building via manual submission to solid directories are beneficial to website SEO. I understand the purpose, and that no one truly knows SEO algorithims, but its hard to get concrete results (even SEOMOZ etc...are not very direct in answering). What type of tangible results have you all gotten with this type of SEO approach. (please no generic/spammy posts telling me about good link submitting tools, if you have a tool or site that you like or is SOLID then drop it, but save everyones time with the BS.

Agreed.

Also, from a search engine ranking point of view, I think directory submissions are totally overrated. Sure, you get a link, but you're on a page with hundreds of other sites. Not much value there. For time spent, they're pretty pointless.

But they can bring a little traffic. Some of the bigger ones are better and worth a shot.

Directory submission now has less value. But it would be better to spend your time submitting on general directories I think it has high value than thousand of general directories. Some niche directories can also give you targeted traffic.

Hi,

If you are able to get backlinks from niche directory which are completely related to your site theme means you can have a good backlinks.

Directory links are worthless now a days but reputed directory like dmoz, lii.org are still important.

So submit site details to good PR directories.

Thanks

Directory submission is a part of SEO, but the value is very small. Article submission works better than directory submission.

I don't agree that dmoz is important. Sure it doesn't hurt, but it's no longer what it used to be some years ago.

So submit site details to good PR directories.
You say directories are worthless, then recommend submitting to them????

Basic rule of thumb if your are going to worry about links:
Will people click on them?

Nobody has used directories to find web sites since 1995. People aren't going there to click the link. Therefore, the link is worthless.
If you feel the need to worry about links, then treat them as advertising (because they are). Only worry about ones that actual people will click on.

So to answer the question are link directory submissions in terms of making a site more connected and therefore more worthwhile in SE eyes?

It depends on the quality of web directories where you submit your site. If you're linking to a bad directory or neighborhood, your efforts would just be useless. It won't improve your ranking at all.

Directory submission is a basic thing to optimize a web page.Yeah you can't expect a huge no of traffic from directory. It may help your keyword to rank well in SE but it take too much time.

They still have there place although the value of directory submissions is decreasing all the time! try for listings in the major directories and directories that dont accpet every submission they recieve as they get better value from thesearch engines than those that do.

My impression is that 95% of links are of little use for seo, and almost all directory links are in that 95%. The real challenge is finding the links that are in the 5% that matter...

you should not focus too much on directories, try to include them as part of the wider plan. there is more than 1 way to skin a cat

I think this could only help if your website is lunch just recently...by doing this you are getting new back links that helps with page rank, page strength, and in some cases even Serp's ( I just notice recently that directory links doesn't have the same value like they did before)

A very insightful persepective!!

But i think when using directory submissions, you can get your website listed in Google and other major search engines in a matter of days sometimes, not the 4-6 weeks it takes using Google's "add a website" page.
