Importance of the Meta Description Tags
Search Engines don’t give very high prominence to the Meta Description tag and may generate a description on the fly while listing your web page in SERP. However, in some Search Engines, a good Meta Description tag might help a page to rank higher for your targeted search terms. This holds true for Flash, Frame or All Image sites that have no content
as well as some high importance websites, where the search term is not found in the text. Insuch cases, some search engines pick up the exact Meta Description tag and display it in its SERP, just below the Title tag. Hence, it is important to write a crisp and enticing Description tag that includes your important keyword phrases and manages to interest your user.

In my opinion, meta description is still important for a website. It can be the deciding factor whether an Internet user would click on your site if it appears on the SERP. A meta description should clearly tell what you website is all about. Putting some keywords on it is one of the best way to do but don't overdo it because it may dilute its effect and may affect your site negatively.

You should view your meta description as an advertisement on the search engine results page. The goal of the advertisement should be to get the user to click your link.

Obviously include your keywords if possible, but make the description human friendly, easy to read and understand and worry less about it's value to SEs, think more of it's value to humans.

Spot on there! You can actually double your clickthru with a good metadesc. It should be short, sweet and on the spot. If you stand out you can also allure more clicks.

I agree with a previous reply that your meta description tag should be more or less an advertisement. Your most important goal is to have the consumer click on your site, so well thought out, informative user friendly tags are crucial.

Theorising over whether or not meta tags are important is a waste of time. Just populate them. That's right. Just add the keywords and description meta tags and get on with your lives. Just do it. Just use them for the purpose they were designed and think about something else more worthwhile.
