I'm currently optimizing my website with a particular keyword. As part of my effort I put " Search *the keyword* " inside the search box. I would like to know if search engines can read this or not, does anyone know?

The code:

HTML Code:
<fieldset>
<input type="text" id="find" onblur="if (this.value == '') {this.value = 'Search *KEYWORD*';}" onfocus="if (this.value == 'Search *KEYWORD*') {this.value = '';}" value="Search *KEYWORD*" />
</fieldset>
</form>
<input type="submit" value="" id="button" />

If it is hard-coded in there...then I'm saying yes, the SEs can read it.

I'd love to know the answer. Try a test: make up a random string of characters, put them in the field and see, once the page has been crawled, if it is indexed.

I'm guessing that Google will read the text, but I doubt very much it will get indexed and count towards an SEO effort, but you never know...
