I would recommend SEOQuake for assessing your competition.

Other than that, not much I'd recommend other than your common sense: as Google state, for your SEO, make your pages good for humans and Google will like it.

If you want to get a rough idea of how well a page is optimised though, head on over to Domain Tools.

In all backlink checker, I like Backlinkwatch the most. It gives the more detailed backlinks information.

I say, google keyword tool has been very helpful. Through this, it somewhat gives you an idea regarding possible traffic and ranking.
