I would recommend SEOQuake for assessing your competition.
Other than that, not much I'd recommend other than your common sense: as Google state, for your SEO, make your pages good for humans and Google will like it.

I use webtoolhub.com especially the position checker and broken link checker. I can see rght away where my site is ranking, as well as check if all the urls on my site are live, not broken.
