some of the best links that you can do to build in your site are the blog commenting and forum posting. they can drive more traffics to your site. building links to forums and blogs are very easy. you just put a comment related to the blog and that the comment should not be spammy.. in forum posting you can link your website through signature linking.
IMO, the best links are natural links. When someone gives a one-way link to your site in their content as a reference or recommendation. This is good for both SEO and traffic.
But obviously it might take a while before you get that kind of recognition. I find that I personally get a lot of traffic from Squidoo and article submission sites.

You are pertaining to natural Links. Can you give examples where can we gain natural links?

You just have to create great content, use other promotion methods, and then people will naturally link to your site. It's probably the hardest type of link to get, but it's the most valuable and can greatly help in search engine rankings.

Of course that kind of link is what Google looking for.
For me, it's natural links and more back links, that is if you want to increase both serps and traffic. But of course there are still a lot of factors to be considered overall.
