Can anyone tell me the best types of links to build for my site.

Not only links that will help my SERP but also links that will get traffic to my site from the links themselves?

IMO, the best links are natural links. When someone gives a one-way link to your site in their content as a reference or recommendation. This is good for both SEO and traffic.

But obviously it might take a while before you get that kind of recognition. I find that I personally get a lot of traffic from Squidoo and article submission sites.

Natural links are really helpful. Article Submission is one of the best way for getting good backlinks to the site; blog commenting is also a good one for that.

A crucial thing about links is their being varied once you get down to actually building them. One has to use links to promote something, not abuse backlinking patterns.

Do not do reciprocal linking, do not do triangle linking, do not use automated link exchanges, do not pay for links, do not spam irrelevant blog comments, do not worry about directory submissions other than dmoz and yahoo.

That should help you decide what you CAN do!

While one shouldn't focus on it, reciprocal links can be helpful. You just have to make sure that they're with relevant, quality sites. And that you don't do too many link exchanges.

the best type of links that you can build that will help you in terms of SERP and traffic are 1.link building through article marketing and 2.Link building through guest postings in popular blogs in your niche. Do them and see the results for yourself.
