I think it's nonsense. Matt Cutts has previously stated that there is no such thing as the Google Sandbox. The algorithm may seemingly cause the appearance of this, but experience should show people that this isn't true for all sites, just spammy ones.

Hmmmm... I am not so sure which sandbox do you mean..

The sandbox that means bad since your site got filtered and removed from the SERP by google?

Or the sandbox accessible through this URL www2.sandbox.google.com?

Well, if the first one happens to my site, I would treat it normal and would just continue with what I thought of doing and is effective for my site.

While on www2.sandbox.google.com, it's an advantage for us SEOers since we'll be able to view the result of the current crawling activity done by google bots. Thus we'll know what to expect when the next update arrive on google.com which displays the proccessed results.

Matt Cutts has actually said that for "certain" categories of website that there are factors taken into account for new sites. I think we can read that as that in competitive, and/or categories where there is massive potential for flooding the index, that some sort of suppression factor is indeed applied until a site "proves" its worth in the index.

The effect of this suppression factor has been confirmed by people like Rand from SEOMoz:

So its not nonsense.

While Google sandbox is not something you can control, there are certain steps you can take in order to make the sandbox effect less destructive for your new site.

There are many initiatives you can take, while in the sandbox, for as example:

Actively gather content and good links - as time passes by, relevant and fresh content and good links will take you to the top.

When getting links, have in mind that they need to be from trusted sources - like DMOZ, CNN, Fortune 500 sites, or other reputable places. Also, links from .edu, .gov, and .mil domains might help because these domains are usually exempt from the sandbox filter.

Build links slowly and steadily.
