So I use the Google Keyword Tool
And I am using SEO Book's Keyword Tool
I enter the term 'packaging tape'
Google tells me that the average monthly LOCAL search volume is over 33,000, but with SEO Book's tool it tells me an average of 8 a day from Google, which equates to 240 for an average month.
Am I missing something here?

Different tools gives different results. It is our duty to decide which tool is effective and accurate for us. Google Adword tool was designed to give an opportunity to advertisers to decide which keywords to target. Data will not be accurate. Also SEO book will not have enough data as they are not is search industry. So I think Google figure is more viable.

For me, Google gives the right volume of search as they've got the big data bank. If you are still doubting, try spacky. com. I use that tool always when I research keyword volumes.

well, 2 tools is not enough to base on the correct result. Try 3 - 5 tools and compare which shows almost similar results.

You know, I've never much liked the SEO Book's keyword tool, I always try to go with Google's results and they seem to work very well for me.

Google Adwords Keyword Suggestions: https://adwords.google.com/select/tools.html
This tool is provided by Google to help advertisers determine the best keywords for their sites. This tool functions a lot like Overture's but does not display the frequency of searchers for each keyword.
It does however provide a detailed listing of keyword suggestions based on the keyword you entered. And since Google is the most popular search engine, its list represents an accurate representation of data.
But I also like SEO Book's keyword tool, and I think the more data that we got the better we will know about the site!

The way to use this type of tool is as a relative measure, not absolute. So if you see that one keyword has 5 times more searches than another keyword, it may indicate that the former has more potential.
You then check your log and you see for yourself what kind of traffic you get for a given keyword...
Feeling is important, like for cooking a good recipe, the book is not enough.

You can't have same results with different KW research tools. Actually, this tools only give us IDEA how much traffic we can gain from ranking to a particular KW.

I think Google Adwords Keywords Tool is much more reliable simply for the one fact that it is owned by Google. The difference between the results could have also occured due to using the BROAD PHRASE option, so go for the EXACT option and you will get a much exact figure.

Different tools try to estimate from different data source. However for search volume on Google specifically (exclude other search engine), then naturally I'll place more weight on data from google itself.

Very true... Both are different companies so they have different results coming from their different databases.
And since your are optimizing for Google then why not use the result given by Google? It makes a lot of sense.

I think the tools from Google is more reliable than seobook tools because our purpose is to get more traffic from google, so why not we use google's tools which shows accurate result.

That really could be confusing, as a suggestion usually it won't gives us a 100% accuracy on results, but I'd rather stick to google tools in my opinion.
