Well, search engine optimization is necessarily necessary, but it does help depending on the website. I have had sites that I added meta tags, keyword tags on the front page, original keyword-rich content and tons of quality backlinks to not even rank on the 1st page. And then I've had other sites that had no optimization on a free host that ranked 1st after only a couple days.

Google is a strange being, and he's good about picking the good sites that are relative to the topic. In my opinion, you can't force a site to the top of SERPs, you have to genuinely try to provide the correct solution to the search.

I think that if your site is optimized pretty tight - then it's up to you to get relevant links. That is tough though - that's why I post articles on Web 2.0 properties

I agree, google really is one strange being, simply because they have to in order for people not to know their exact algo system on how they rank things. They had to keep confusing people and let them keep guessing.

But it won't be too long until someone spills the secret out or someone just finally figure it out.

For the mean time, all we could do is rely on seo. I guess that's better than doing nothing.
