I am looking at promoting my new site and have heard that article submission creates great backlinks. I always assumed that you submit one article to one site, etc. However in researching this I am finding that companies are offering submissions to hundred and thousands of sites for a singular article. Which is the best way of doing it for SEO?

Yes article marketing is the best way to market and promote your site/services and get those needed backlinks and deliver you traffic all at the same time. And it is not hard to do if you know your niche. It does help a bit if you can waffle as I do.

People are screaming out for content for their sites. So thats where you can come in and help out by writing articles that people will post on their site but they will include the link found in the resource box which is the link to your site obviously.

You do not need to pay to do article marketing or have anyone do it for you if you can do it yourself and the chances are you probably can. Once you create your first article (And I'd suggest doing it on Ezine.com) Then you will find you can put an article together in a matter of minutes. You will "manually spin them" in your head.

Anyway the sooner you start, the sooner you'll get results. But if you make good articles about 500 words at least, people will add them to their site and you'll be able to find them by searching in Google for the articles title in hyphens "".

I do this. And I check my backlinks stats regulary and they are always going up thanks for writing articles. I write one article and post it on my blog first so it gets indexed on their. Then I post it to a bunch of article sites. But I mainly use Ezines, PRLog, Amazines etc etc. As you get involved you will start to learn of more sites and the best strategy to take.

Lets say an article was written badly or that at the very least it was not top notch? So long as the article is unique, can an averagely written article have a negative impact on my site?

I think before submitting the article to another one, its best that you rewrite the article first.

I am getting sent a whole heap of offers from people to write and spin SEO articles for me. I am getting sent examples of articles submitted to article sites with backlinks and anchor text. When I google these domains using - link:<sietname> I cannot find a backling from these article sites - is this the correct behavior? Do all backlinks end up on google? Is it only a percentage, how would I know if I've wasted my time or not in creating a backlink?

Yes you are right some companies are offering submission to hundred and thousand of site for singular article but quantity is not important thing in SEO the important thing is only how quality content you are providing to search engines so provide quality content to search engine and do submission only on high PR sites. Sites like ezinearticles.com, articlesbase.com etc.

First of all, forget about spinner articles. They're not the best way to go. Only go for articles written in quality English.

Second, no. Google does not post all backlinks when searching for their anchor text. A more accurate tool would be http://www.backlinkwatch.com/ but even that doesn't include everything.

Article submission is so easy. I suggest you do it yourself. That way, you can monitor the quality of article directories where you submit your articles to. There are autofillers out there which can make the submission a lot faster.

One tip here is to make Short, information packed articles!

The longer the article the less likely it is to be read. It takes more work to pack good information into a shorter article but it is worth the work because it will be read more often.

I personally submit articles to only 10 or so top article directories like these:

ezinearticles.com/
articledashboard.com
easyarticles.com
goarticles.com
selfgrowth.com
ideamarketers.com
articlesfactory.com
articlealley.com

Submitting to small and hundreds of directories will not help.

I believe that article submission is good in gaining your traffic. As long it is done properly. And based on my experience, I really don't get a good backlinks coming from article. Instead,forum posting does. Because search engines index forums frequently, so posting in forums is a good way to gain quality backlinks with the anchor text of your choice. Just participate in forums and follow the right procedure.

I think article submission is not enough to promote your site. If you are thinking to promote your site than you have to do many other things like book marking and also social networking submission is main factor for promoting your site.
