Hi,

I am getting backlinks using the keyword: computer products in india

and here the problem arises, which is whether the keyword is case sensitive.

What can i use

Computer Products in India (or) computer products in india

Is both of them are equal or produce different results on google.

I don't think so, the keywords are not case sensitive. But it is better to use "Computer Products in India", which looks pretty descent.

I guess both of them will have the same search result in google, Regarding to the article I read, "surfers don't bother with upper case characters when searching the web (apart from Altavista) and I prefer to include more keywords than use up the space in this way."

I wouldn't have thought it mattered at all, but I did a search in Google and noticed slight variations in the SERPs for the two variations. The changes were minimal though, and I doubt it would effect your rankings much either way.

Weird - I was under the impression that google search is case-insensitive. Which it might as well be, but a search for "red cross" and "Red Cross" give different results. Before jumping at conclusions, I did two separate searches for "red cross". Which again came out non-identical (but the difference to be seen was close to that with lower-case versus upper case). My theory is that this has something to do with identical queries requested by the same client, but I may be wrong. Any thoughts on that?

I've tried multiple identical queries from the same client with no variation.

It seems there is little rhyme nor reason to why Google is offering slightly different results depending on case. Looking back to the example in this thread, I notice that it doesn't seem to effect the case in the pages displayed: it's still picking up keywords be they upper or lower case. Though the pages matching the case are moved up slightly in the rankings.

Perhaps this is a good reason to vary your anchor text in your backlinking strategy. Padmanaban, you should really try a bigger variation in your anchor text anyway, and why not cover both the upper and lower cases at the same time? Might I be so bold to recommend trying a selection like these:

Computer Products in India
computer products in india
Computer Peripherals India
Computer Products India
computer peripherals India

And so on.

We'd love to hear how you get on with these

No! Keywords are not case sensitive. Google reads small and large case texts in the same manner. They are not different.

So why do the search results vary slightly depending on case?

Clear history?! What on earth would that do? Google doesn't read your web history.

As for it happening, I've tested it on a couple of machines now, different browsers, logged in to iGoogle and not logged in and there are most definitely variations in the SERPs dependent on case.

Anymore bright ideas, Andrew?

Thanks Ed Gray for somehow clarifying things out because I've been using google for the longest time, I really never thought that keywords case would make any difference in google search results. If there really is, I think it would be negligible since most of internet users do not really bother with their keywords be it in capital or small letters when searching.

That's a bit confusing. As far as I know keywords are not case sensitive. But if they happen to be which I still doubt that they are, then use only lower cases since people who type keywords on search engine box doesn't really uses capital letters..

Case has absolutely NO influence on rankings at Google. You may occasionally see a difference in the results because of personlization or Google throwing in a page or site on page 1 of the SERPs that was just indexed for the first time (Google Honeymoon)... but other than that, there is no difference. That could happen for 2 consecutive searches for the same phrase, same case.

Plural vs. singular on the other hand DOES have an influence on Google rankings. They are seen as as different keyword phrases and ranked differently.
