Where would the internet be without external links ????

I mean it would mean that signature links wouldn't be allowed for a start!!

Or even internal linking....

Try a site without internal links and see how useful it is.

I don't think that internal linking will give a big turn around rather you are having a PR7+ or more home page and link from there to your target page

Always, stick with EXTERNAL for success....

Yes especially if your page has a high PR. BUT Internal linking doesn't help that much compare that you have link from other sites.

I'm not an expert, but I've read that internal linking is one way of signalling to the search engines which pages you consider to be central -eg if several pages all link to "page xyz" with xyz as the anchor text then this tells the search engiens that (within YOUR website) the "page xyz" is more imporant than another page concerning xyz.

Honestly, internal link building doubles your traffic.
Let say you are toping for the keyword " Link building services" then try internal links on that page.May be you can drive that traffic to internal pages..

It would have to compete against all the other threads on linkbuilding, not to mention the threads on PR.

It's certainly in the running.

In addition to rankings by content, many search engines rank pages based on inbound links.

Google's description of their PageRank system, for instance, notes that Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B.[1] Knowledge of this form of search engine rankings has fueled a portion of the SEO industry commonly termed linkspam, where a company attempts to place as many inbound links as possible to their site regardless of the context of the originating site.

OK! A little education seems to be needed here!

For the ones who don't seem to know ->

Internal linking == links to the pages on YOUR OWN site eg: your site navigation
