Looking at adding articles to my website which is a Paid Surveys site. I am unsure of what kind of articles i should have. For instance, would it hurt my rankings for survey related content if i had articles that didnt mention surveys but talked about another work at home oppurtunity.

That won't hurt. But then again try to stay focus on your theme / topic. Make it easier for the SE to decide what your site is all about.

SEs rank PAGES not sites, every single page could be on a different topic and it wouldn't matter in the slightest!

The same people who go on about "themes" for websites are usually the same ones prattling on about "article directories being great" and there, just about every page is a different topic!!

I would suggest writing pages that is relevant to your readers - not just adding content for the sake of adding content. The best sites that do well over time and naturally earn backlinks are those that are best for people. Ultimately, search engines want to promote sites that are useful for their customers (search engine users). While the pages need to be search engine optimized, quality content is really the silver bullet.

I would start by making a list of questions that your target audience regularly asks when using your service - or is considering using your service, and write optimized, useful articles on topics that answer those questions, concerns, or problems.

I also feel the same, if you are giving a backlink to your site through an article, it will really count if the keywords are found in the landing page. Google will sense it as a relevant backlink. But if you do link post many articles for your site on a different context, then there are chances of it being treated as spam.

So please try to post articles that have a similarity to your website content.

Regards,

if you are posting some articles giving your website url, it is safe and advised to be done with an article that has some keywords to that of the landing page. If you write articles in such a way, google will sense your website has relevant backlinks. And on the other hand if you post many articles that are of no connection with your website, there are chances of it being treated as spam.

So, if you are really looking for results, post some articles that gives some relevant information of your website.

Regards,

Completely Agree with you Aron. Maintaining relevancy is equally important while submitting your articles. SEs like Google are really smart enough to figure out relevant backlinks. If you are not doing so, all your efforts in writing the article will drain, and you will be left with nothing fruitful.

One possibility is to write an article on your site that you will find easy to link back to on forums/other articles/squidoo/digg etc - ie refer to my really useful article on X. This means that you could create more backlinks.

Yep. I agree with you Tarp guy. Content is still worth a lot in SEO. But it's easy to forget that our audience is human. Not a software bot.

Theme of the content does matter but don't go at it mechanically. Personal touch or deviations from the theme are acceptable once in a while. You might find that these articles may get more traffic. Better yet, try to combine personal touch with business. One of the best examples is the beginners guide to SEO by SEOMOZ.

It won't hurt ranking as long as you publish original content, but for your site credibility do publish articles related to your site subject as your site is about survey the post survey related articles.
