Really, it depends on your budget and time constraints, I do my own but I am cheap. I could probably get better results if I hired a "trusted" SEO to do it for me, but there seems to be a big problem with "trust" in this field, so I trust me....
If you don't have the knowledge and like 1 year to learn hire somebody
If you want to learn buy Aron Walsh SEO BOOK is the best way to start

dear if you want to earn good income from your site , than you should invest in SEO. Its better for you to hire an expert SEO. All over the world the ROI rate on SEO is very high, so you should invest on it.
i think you can get the job done by an seo expert, he can help in boosting your site high, make sure that you are leaving the job to a reputed company. Learn some seo and keep track of the things that he is doing to get your site rank high. afterwards slowly you can take the work done by yourself
and seo is not that hard and anyone who has interest in it can learn it easily, you can always be sure of the results if you create more backlinks to your website.
i suggest please let the seo experts do the job.they have the expertise and will help you with the right guidance and get you the targeted traffic.a lot of newbies claim to be seo companies but trust me they dont even know 10% of it also. All the seo tools are available on the net so anyone can claim to be an seo expert and doing it yourself will only be wasting your productive and precious time
If you have the time do it yourself. I am starting the process with my site and yes it takes time and lots of effort to learn the correct ways but at least you know what and how things have been done on your site.

if you want to learn & if you have enough time then you can do it yourself but you should have your own confidence & patience in this field , but if you are looking out for your business then i will recommend you to go with any well known seo excerpt
Well. here's something sweet. Let the SEO expert do his/her thing. Have a sneak peek. Learn your stuff and then apply.
But seriously hiring an SEO or DIY SEO depends on what you try to achieve. If you are bringing in something like $1000 a month from your site and want to improve that, invest in an SEO. If you don't have much hope of monetizing your site, do SEO yourself. It's a great learning experience.
Small tip - If you decide to hire an SEO, Make sure to look at his/her prior projects to see what he/she is doing. Check the site, check the PageRank. It's not 100% accurate but can give you some pointer. Check the backlink profile of the projects. If you like what you see, go ahead with it. If not, seek someone else. If you come across someone who says that they know How Google works/ They understand Google Algorithm / They have some affiliation with Google other than Google adwords or analytics qualification, run a mile. Your boy is making it up.
I think you should outsource to someone firtst, then learn from them and see what can you get from SEO, it's a professional skills until you learned it.
