I'm looking for someone to do some SEO on my website, my goal is top 5 positions in google for a number of 2,3 and 4 key words. I've been contacted by someone who has had a look at my website and is proposing this:

What Im trying to work out is, is his proposal worth $75 a month, they believe this will be a 6 month project but I can cancel at any point.

Here are some of the points observed on your site that needs some attention from search engines point of view:

1. Your site has many inner pages. So, you need a sitemap that can help search engine robots to find all the site pages to be easily accessible from one place.
2. The keywords you have mentioned has a very low density as compared to the exisiting content on the site. That is keyword to content ratio is low.
3. Pages under 'Maintenance' category are under construction. We need to include content on it.
4. Many pages have duplicate content or infact, same pages are accessible by 2 different clicks like Fire Alarm>Commercial & Fire Alarm>Maintenance
5. Google has not identifying any links coming from external sources to your site.

Based on the above observations, we have recommended solutions for your website in a monthly plan format to achieve the final goal. In a nutshell, your site needs proper on-site optimization and a good link popularity for which we have customized the timeline for implementing the techniques, to suit your site's current scenario.

On-site Initial Setup Phase: (Month 1)

9. Bookmark all the new & existing content of your website/blog and also any other relevant content you find on web, on your account created on social bookmarking sites.
10. Make changes on-site everymonth to keep the keyword in focus and to make search engines visit the site frequently.

could you explain a bit more?

They are based in India so their terminology may be a little different but they understood my requirements - top 5 in Google.

Can anyone suggest a company who can deliver SEO results?

Doesn't matter one bit where they are, terminology "different" my a ~~censored~~ s! They are just a bunch of know nothing chancers and scammers.

There is NOT ONE ITEM ON YOUR LIST THAT WOULD BE USEFUL

What they "propose" is PURE BS. Instead of paying them, change your $75 into 1 dollar bills, make little pile of them then set them on fire and toast some marshmallows. That way you won't feel cheated by having an empty wallet.

What's your site URI and we'll give you a HONEST evaluation for nothing.

Well it seems so, I have submitted a site map to google and was appearing top of google local business map but have dropped off of that recently - not entirely sure how that works.

I also took the advice of the blog, not sure if I should or not but here it is www.electrifire.co.uk/blog I need to mak it look like the rest of the site but am I heading in the right direction with it?

It's a good point HOWEVER we are not DP here.
I don't even do any optimising for clients at all any more so I certainly are not looking for any work.

$75 wouldn't even get an hour of my time (and like Chris I'm not looking for work), and anyone willing to work for $75 per month for 6 months to get a whopping $450 is NOT likely to help your site. They are likely someone in a 3rd world country who has learned a few buzz words and cheap, low quality link building techniques who are going to spam useless blogs with comments and forums w/ sig links in hopes of making you think they are doing something useful.

When it's over they will have milked you for $450 and if the keywords you're targetting are the least bit competitive, you'll likely be left with no page 1 rankings... If the keyword phrases you're targeting are NOT competitive, you could likely have ranked for them anyway by simply creating a page on your site and listing the targeted keyword phrase as the <title> of your page, including it in the <h1>, mentioning it a couple times in the content of the page, and using the phrase as link text when linking to the page on your own site.

This "Tom foolery" (in voice of Adam West) is not SEO.

Well I told him where to go

I have been contacted by a UK company which say they can guarantee me top 4 in google, £350 and results will take 3 months to achieve. Im more inclined to go ahead with this as Im in the UK as well and communication will be much more easily. For now I can't afford the initial outlay so I'll continue myself.

Could someone confirm or slate me with regards to my blog, I've read that a blog is a good way to generate fresh content for your website and it should have a number of links back to your website.

This is an initial post on my blog (never done it before and make take me a couple of attempts to get it right)

NOBODY can guarantee any position in the results.

And any "SEO" who contacts YOU rather than you contacting them is NOT all they seem to be.

Good SEOs have no need to tout potential customers, they already have enough work.
Good SEOs don't talk about "rankings" they know the importance of conversions.
Good SEOs won't blabber on about toolbar PR, or "witter" on about "twitter", facebook etc.
And "Web2.0", "Link Wheel", "dummy blogs" (splogs) etc should never be suggested,
and a "blog" is nothing special, they have no "magic powers" where SEs are concerned.

mmm, you give me food for thought! Blogging will give me fresh content can I be bothered with it - not sure.

I'll give myself to until Jan see if I can get my site into Google better, if not I will have no alternative but to employ a SEO company

Well, you could also try hiring just a freelancer instead of a company. That would be much cheaper. Although nowadays there are a lot who pretend to know everything but couldn't deliver any quality service for you. Its wise to screen them thoroughly.

electrifire - You should be confident about the company or the person you are looking forward. Few things to keep in mind while you choose somebody to work for you.

1. Credentials of Work done before.
2. Deliverable from their side.
3. Transparent enough to tell you what they will be doing and in what time frame.
4. Expected Result (As nobody can guarantee results)
5. Cost associated with the project and payment terms.
6. After Sale Service
7. 24x7 Support

hahaha! some genius answers, Chris!

I've had quite a few people contact me of late about work, not that I can take any on right now, and many have already got quotes from local SEO companies. One of the things in common they all seem to be saying right now, aside from the obvious twitter nonsense, is "you gotta start a blog"

This seems to be the be all and end all for a lot of SEO companies these days. If it's mentioned, don't use them. Do these people not realise the effort it takes to build and maintain a good blog?
