Do you really believe paid directories are the way to go? I think you may get identical results by submitting your site to free directories (and there are many of them). Unless you really, really believe that only paid directories will bring new customers to your site.

I don't know anyone that uses directories. It's an appalling way to actually find things compared to searching in Google... the links are pretty low value too, personally, I wouldn't bother with any of them.

DMOZ is more than good enough. The money is better spent for some other improvements like getting additional content from service providers.

Dmoz is the only one i will pay to get listed on. When you check the pr, it has 9. It means : seo benefits. I think is worth getting listed on it.

If you have budget you need to spend, then you can pay to list in yahoo directory. Otherwise I don't recommend.

Totally wrong. Toolbar PR has absolutely NO SEO "benefits".

AND even if it had. IS YOUR link going to be on the "PR9" page?

No of course it isn't. It is going to be on some page buried 8 or 10 clicks away from any kind of "value", real or imagined.

Stop believing the hype put out by strangely enough directory owners who are preying on the gullible that the useless PR of the "home" page somehow makes it essential that you pay them for a listing on some page that is so remote from the "home" page not even they cannot find it!

I have posted the same question in 3-4 webmaster forums, 70% them told me not to invest in yahoo directory but 30% does recommend it. what i can see is most of the sites which are ranking very well in google are listed over there. my website is ranking very good for my present keyword which are longtail keywords and dosnt bring much visitors to my website. now we are going in to phase II and we'll target some more competitive keywords. my question is would my website get any benefit from being listed in yahoo directory? My God m so confused :

Ok. I'll put it another way.

What do you EXPECT to gain from being listed?

Probably not.

It's just one link buried several "clicks" down in the pages, highly unlikely that it will be ever found by any real person to gain traffic from it.
The "link weight" from it is probably minimal, and should your "home" page appear in the Yahoo! SERPs, it will show the title and description from the directory entry.

I think it depends on the clients budget.

Benefits of Yahoo directory
  • Visibility
For a new website, a position in Yahoo directory adds to its exposure. It is seen by the human visitors as well as Yahoo Slurp, especially if the slurp is finding it difficult to crawl your site. In other words, Yahoo directories enhances your web presence.
  • Help in organic listing
Yahoo has never admitted this, but from the existing users, the hint is that being in the directory helps a website to be included in the organic listing of Yahoo. Though the impact is not very high, it indeed creates an effect indirectly.
  • Quality inbound link
Yahoo directory also serves as an inbound link to your site depending on your position and the category in which you are positioned.
Yahoo directory is not as relevant as it used to be. Still, it brings the necessary visibility to a new website. And if you are careful of the category in which you place your website, you can reap the benefits you had in mind while enlisting.

More support for Yahoo directory:

The benefit of the yahoo directory is mainly that yahoo's directory pages typically all have a pr 6 and up, which if you know something about buying links, $300 for a pr 6 site, for an entire year is considered dirt cheap. Pr6 links typically range $200 per month.
