I think the content and backlinks both are important , as good content is what people are searching and like to read that and if you are updating regularly it is more better and Links are mainly for increasing traffic but also at the same time links are important so all should know about your blogs as until people will not reach there , then there is no use og good content too. So both are important for SEO and are of similar significance. For more details on SEO-Content vs linking , visit here

What method is better to get more traffic?
1. Fresh updated content.
2. Back links.
Thank you!
First of all, you better find a more diversified way to get links (like maybe putting content out there that people will link to). In my opinion, the use of article and web directories should be limited, and usually don't amount to much given the quality of the link comes from some way back page with no real value.

Second, you listed them in the right order, content is king.

Third, those two tactics are only 2 of many parameters to optimize your site.

I would say backlinks. I have some sites which are only updated once or twice a year but they are at the top of the serps due to backlinks and onpage seo.

Combination of Fresh Content and Backlinks is required to get more traffic to your site via Search Engines. Specially, Google gives more credits for FRESH content (in your site) and backlink from another FRESH & UNIQUE content (From your other blog under some other domains).

Fresh content and back links yes! But in my experience internal links (link from one of your webpages to another) can help new content get indexed faster, as spiders (google) find it easier to navigate the website.. Just add a few internal links on every page.. I got this idea when I used to use wikipedia a lot. If you look here you'll notice internal links all over the place..

Both are important.
Fresh content is required for frequent indexing. Search engines love fresh content. Back links helps in getting high PR. You can achieve higher rankings if search engines indexed your site more frequently. And you can get more traffic after getting higher rankings on search engines. So both things are important to get high traffic…

Yep not that toolbar PR is of any use.

Only if it is for words or phrases people search for.

So overall 3/4 out of 5, probably better than most people get with their "lists"

Both are essential. If the quality of fresh content is good people themselves recommend to others which automatically creates link so fresh & quality content is life of a website.

Can you elaborate on the no answer on search engines liking fresh content. I was under the impression (through reading "expert" SEO sites!) that fresh content was an important part of SEO and gaining rankings in the SERP's.

Well it isn't.

It's just the usual case of the "experts" making things up to suit what they think they see.

Certainly new pages and sites appear high in the results but it is not because they are "fresh", it's simply because their natural position in the results is not determined until all the factors are fully analysed, which takes a few days.

And WHAT constitutes "fresh content" anyway? If I write an entirely new document detailing Einstein's theory of relativity would that deserve a place in the results above some of the academic works that have been published because it's "fresh"?

Search engines want UNIQUE and AUTHORATITIVE content to show to their users.
They want content that their users are actually looking for.

It does not matter if it was written 15 minutes, 15 hours, days, weeks, months or 15 years ago.

Ok so the difference being "unique" and "authoritative" which becomes even more difficult than just "fresh". I see your point.

BTW, when will you have that Einstein article written?

and for the South of the country it will start with

"Y'all ain't gonna believe this"

Backlinks as well as good and fresh content both have important role in getting traffic. Also updating fresh content to your site help to retain visitors other then increasing traffic too.
