you should always make use of your ALT attributes. It helps Google understand what is in an image and also gives those folks that are browsing with Lynx or some other text browser a chance to understand a page.

As Matt Cutts explains, just put a short description of the photo, no spamming, up to around 7 words.

Don't underestimate this - believe it or not, you can get good traffic through Google Images, you'd be amazed at how many people (myself included) use the visual reference it provides to do some online shopping.

ALT attributes are very beneficial to search and the overall usability of a web site. Blind people browse the internet as well, and they have special programs which will read the alt tags out loud to them or translate it to a brail reading pad.

I always use the alt attribute just out of good practice, regardless whether I think it'll have any significant impact on SEO for the current site.

This is EXACTLY why I wrote Get the names right! alt's are NOT tags

Are you asking about the title element (title tag == <title>) or the title attribute?

Alt is an attribute, not a tag and Image is an element. Thus we use the TITLE Attribute and the ALT Attribute to provide additional information about the image element.

Actually the alternate attribute is there to provide an alternative text to display when the useragent cannot render the image.

The longdesc (long description) attribute is what should be used to provide (a URL to where) additional information about the image can be found.

I didn't notice that in his sig link.

If your a professional - you gotta know to put the alt attribute on every pic. Google doesn't read pictures.

And while he's at it - put KWs in the alt attribute

Cramming "keywords" into the alt attributes is a sure sign of a "wannabee SEO" and another case of "1999 thinking".
