Why??

There is absolutely no XML sitemaps on ANY site I have anything to do with and there is absolutely no problem with getting every page indexed.

XML sitemaps are a "band-aid" or a "fudge" to cover up for poor navigation AND a sitemap coded in HTML will be a hundred times "better" than the XML "fudge".

never knew that chris I've always submitted a XML sitemap, as my navigation is created on the fly (require menu.php) could I rename it sitemap.php and submit that - that would be the best sitemap wouldn't it?

You don't "submit" anything, simply have an HTML sitemap ON YOUR SITE and link to it.

Ive been creating a xml sitemap and submitting it to google each time I edit a link, is this wrong?

I tend to use a sitemap generator and think my menu.php would make a better site map

Submit and XML sitemap if you want, it will make little difference to anything really useful.

I added a sitemap to my website and linked to it via the index page and submitted the sitemap.php to google yet it says its incorrect file format?

this is the sitemap www.electrifire.co.uk/sitemap.php

is this because the file contains java script

edit: seems its not as simple as I thought - Im working on it maybe I don need to worry, Google knows the site is there and can read the links through my site map?

It will be if you are expecting it to behave the same as the XML file would be.

It is just a standard HTML page, style it to fit in with your pages, link it in your navigation and/or in all the page footers. ALL crawlers will find it not just Google.

Categorise it so it is useful for visitors as well.

A site map is for SE or for the users? I think you can add xml sitemap and html sitemap! Why not?

Both sitemap are important and valuable.
html sitemap is for users and XML sitemap for search engine crawlers that helps a site to get index its all pages quickly.

For any wordpress users.. I use a plugin called Sitemap Index.. It is dead easy to set up and within 2 weeks or so I had no crawl errors or any other errors in Google Analytics..

I tried other plugins but this one was by far the easiest. Especialy as someone who isn't too confident with the whole webhosting/web design part of webmastering. I am purely seo and like to do as much on my own without calling in expensive programmers..

I have an xml sitemap because some "guru" recommended it. I also added a super simple sitemap on my nav bar that basically just links to every page in my site.

Chris, it is linked in the Nav bar (menu) but hadn't put it in the footer, is this recommended?
