I would like my forum to rank in the first page, but I am probably just dreaming there.
Under 'Thai forum' I used to be on the 7th page but now I am gone completely. How can I get it back? Do Ijust need back links? Or is there a trick?
Backlinks with the anchor text "thai forum" would help a lot.
The competition for that term isn't too bad - a few PR 3, a couple PR 5 etc. I would say page 1 is acheivable, but it's going to be some work.
Download the SEOQuake toolbar and do an assessment of the sites appearing for that term, look at their backlinks etc. Then, try to get your links in the same places. You essentially just need to do what they're doing, just that little bit better.
Good luck.

Optimize your keywords. Don't focus on the PR but rather focus on keyword rankings.

In order to create back links, engaging on the techniques like blog commenting, article submission, classified ads, social bookmaking and networking, forum posting, press release and link exchange helps. Just make sure to get back links from relevant and DoFollow sites because Google gives more value on them.
You have to get more backlinks via that anchor text. You can do blog comments, Social bookmarks, Article submissions as well as you can use web properties 2.0 to get your site top. But, Google required constant daily hard work....
the forum should be interesting as well as providing useful information so that existing users spread the word out , articles on topics which are discussed on your forum can help. Directory submissions isnt a bad idea either
What trick? There's none. You just need to build more quality links for your site to boost your SERP. As simple as that.
I agree! In order to create quality of back links, engaging on the following helps:
write articles then submit it to lots of article sites and directories.
Engaging on dofollow forums
Commenting on dofollow blogs
Participate on social bookmarking and networking sites.
Acquire quality backlinks as mentioned above and use your anchor text effectively. REMEMBER you're not the only one doing SEO, your competitors below are trying to climb and those at the top list are trying their best to maintain there position.
Check your competitors, check their backlinks, visit their website so you can plan and fill in the gap. If competition is stiff exert extra effort in your SEO.

I also experienced that, my keyword rank in the first page and got lost for a weeks and then return to its original rakings. I noticed, if Google has updates there's a potential to lost your rankings.

So that covers getting junk links.
Now! What about the "quality" links?
