Need to check my backlinks and dont know where to go and be able to find a good one.
Please tell me a good backlink checker tool that is accurate.
I already know of some backlink checker tools that can be found at the top of Google SERPs but they are not accurate.
So help me with this if you know of any.
Thanks.

There isn't such a thing.

If there was, what would you do with the data?

I use google webmaster tools for this, and the data is useful (to me anyway) for finding sites that may have linked to you and you were unaware of it ie: Someone found your content worth linking to. This information is VERY valuable as you add content to your site/blog for determining topics the the reader finds valuable.

Keep in mind Chris, not all links are worthless spam and advertising. I have a link from a home improvement site (he wrote about my site in his blog) that provides me with traffic. This traffic is potential buyers for my products. Links like that, to me, are VERY important and have NOTHING to do with spam or advertising. I didn't ask for it, he thought what I offer could be useful to his readers (and I agree )

In 10+ years at this I know how useful links are and exactly what they are useful for, but as yet I have never found a use for knowing how many links there were/are or seemed to be.

Which links are of GENUINE value are easily found in the site logs, they are the ones that send real visitors, the rest are simply links. You do not know which links "count" for SEs or how much they "count", the numbers that SEs report are wildly inaccurate, the ones they show invariably do not send visitors.

I've owned, maintained and generally looked after many sites in many market places (including adult) and have yet to find a case where knowing the number of links to the pages gave me any thing useful to work with.

I agree it is not neccessary to know exactly how many links you have. But I like a lot of other people like to have a rough idea as more is normally better. But I do not swear by it, i am just interested.

I use a program called link popularity check. It isn't that accurate but it gives some insight. The best thing is the fact you can compare yourself with the competition.

LOL, yeah i use google webmaster tools to find them.

HOWEVER!
The only use i have for this is to check that one of my other sites script is correctly putting the link into itself.

There is no other point of worrying or even looking.
As chris said, Just look at your visitor stats on your server/site.

That will tell you who is sending you visitors and what backlinks are worth trying to keep ( maybe you need to be helpful to that certain webmaster? )

Does anyone set a standard Backlink Checker Tool?

I'm curious and confuse because all of the Backlink Checker Tools I have used has different backlink number results in one site.

Should I take that nobody actually knows why they try to count links, it's just something that the "experts" deem should be done.

I use links popularity checker to check the site backlinks, which can check the backlinks from yahoo, google, and altvista and so on! I think we can get overview of you link popularity, which you can get some insight of the influence of backlins!

I do use backlink checkers, but only when doing an assessment of a competitors website. Its a reasonable way of finding out what you're up against and where they got their links from.

It's pretty useless to know you're own..

The problems there are:

A: It presupposes that your "competitors" are more "clued up" than you are

B: YOU are always at least one step behind them
