What is your definition as to what a competitive keyword is?

In my niche, one and two word terms are highly competitive (as with most niches) and because of that I have concentrated on longtail keywords first and over time I will be competitive with 1-2 word terms that I target.

An example of that would be "Real Estate".

Long tail KW - "Beach Front Real Estate Miami"

competitive keywords for me are those keywords with high searches and a lot of websites are fighting for a good position with it. It is competitive as having good SERP positions for it will ensure traffic coming from Search engines...

Thats right! Cometitive keywords are always tough to get on the top as they have a very big competition with one another. They are high seached and most generated keywords for traffic.

Highly competitive keywords are keywords that a lot of businesses are targeting for their websites. You'll usually find that keywords with a lot of searches per month are highly competitive.

Check out this keyword service.. Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

Here you get all sorts of information like monthly searches, competition etc. Its very useful!!

Perfect example! (guess I could have elaborated) For me "fence" or "aluminum fence" are highly competitive so I concentrate on "buy aluminum fence online" or "buy aluminum fence materials" hence the "longtail" keyword which also contains the competitive keyword(s).

IMO too many webmasters/SEO's neglect the longtail when starting or optimizing a site, it is relatively easy to gain rankings an many of these with results usually happening quickly.

Means you're going to deal with many competitors..

For trying it out, you can try Google Insight for observing the result of keyword if its competitive or not Like THIS

The best approach to keyword selection is to select keywords with high efficiency i.e. selecting keywords that are popular yet less competitive

competitive keyword simply a keyword that is used a lot. and you may use google adwords keyword tool to check it also make sure to select a keyword that have less competiton but higher search volume.

Though mesothelioma and lawyer, attorney and compensation terms are amongst the most competitive terms.
