My site is on a Wordpress platform, which has settings that "ping" sites when you update your site. I added a list of sites in the settings to ping to when I update:

I can't remember where I got that list, but it was probably from some "expert SEO".

The question is, have you used pinging services, if so does this actually do anything to help with SEO, rankings (SERP's) and indexing?

I've used pinger and pingomatic just to get pages indexed. Doesn't really seem to work - not as well as sig links (sig links work for me SOMETIMES)

Are you telling me that sig links get your pages indexed faster???? I really don't see the relationship between pinging and sig links..... maybe your comment was just for link dropping purposes?

pinging has nothing at all to do with SEO, Search Engines, indexing etc etc.

a ping will signal to the feed aggregators that there is a new item that can read from the RSS feed.

So yes, a sig link on a well crawled forum page may well get your "blog post" indexed by search engines within minutes.

I use the method of posting about any sites I put online on my own forum with an anchor text link in the post to make sure my link/site gets noticed.

If I am bored and have nothing pressing to do I can also watch when the thread get's spidered on my forum/online.php page and by which search engine.

I had one day when there we're over 40 Yahoo Slurps on the forum, and I sat there for a while watching them move about.

Thankfully we found a way to slow that spidering activity down a bit as far as I remember as it didn't reoccur.

So pinging essentially only tell aggregators there is new content?

that's about it. It's just a "heads up" kind of message to certain RSS feed "consumers"
