My friend has a pretty new real estate site. It does not rank for anything right now but I am working on changing that.

My question is he has a bunch of link exchanges, and there are a bunch of banners and junk on the home page.

If I just get rid of all that stuff will he get a penalty with google? I really want to trim the fat from the home page.

Take a look and give me some suggestions please!

How can a site get a penalty from Google for removing Junk when it has no ranks to penalise?

If any improvements are made that Google deem as providing a decent result to a search query the only penalty removing links to others on your inded page is likely to have is the "presumably" index page link on the recipricol sites being removed to.

Simply (if you want to keep the recip links) agree to a different strategy with those linking.

I checked out the links on yahoo explorer for that site http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com...&bwmo=d&bwmf=s

I don't see any good ones any way.

The site is not very user friendly other than the MLS search at the top of the page and all the banners just clutter the site up. First thing I would do is clean up the site so IF anyone ever visits they will want to return.

Second, the blog is horrible! The grammar is 1st grader written and she has only written 2 articles in over a year! It needs a better theme than the basic wordpress theme that comes with every installation of wordpress and she needs to actually use the blog to update properties, report on real estate news, mortgage news (like the tax credits for first time home buyers), and information on the area she represents. I know real estate agents in my area that make great use of having a blog on their site. A good idea would be to research other real estate blogs to get ideas.

And get rid of the popup chat window! Very annoying and pops up on every page I clicked on no matter how many times I closed it!
