Basic Question.

I dont usually put much thoughts into my Meta Description. Does Google give it a decent amount of weight? Or is it not important anymore?

No search engine give any real weight to the meta description contents.

The real value of the meta description is that it will be used for the text snippet in the results if the phrase that was used to create the results appears in the description.

Yeah, thats what I thought. That's why I dont put much thought into mine. I just give a brief description on whats on the web page.

I just noticed that the keywords I ranked higher for were included in my meta descriptions which makes sense since it is what the page is about. =)

That's the best way.

The word "meta" as a prefix, is used to describe an abstraction form another concept, basically a "description" of the wider scoped document.

It does occasionally appear as the description of the page in the "snippet", which is why I never neglect it, I don't waste time and I don't stuff keywords in, I write a simple description of what you will find if you click through, again think of humans.

at the begining of establishing website,i pay more attention on meta and keyword, i find it is effective at the begining..

It has been reported that the "new Google" (Caffiene), starting after the holidays will once again use the META_Desc. Now whether that is true or not only Google knows.

So it is. None of their articles are appearing. I have a copy of the the article but it would not be "fair use" to post it.

The article stated in part that Google would be using the meta_desc with the full rollout of Caffiene and sited a reference to something Matt C has stated. I don't have the link to Matt's statement, but here are a couple of articles I did find:

Just the usual speculative guesswork.

when anybody starts off talking about "meta titles" and "alt tags" you know they haven't put any effort into get anything mundane, such as facts to work from!!
