H1 Tags - Who uses them

Personally I don't use H1 tags as firstly my titles and bold enough already and secondly the effect they have on how they look is not to be desired. I am also pretty sure they value they hold is only when a title is not bold enough in the first place to make it stand out as the keyword for spider food.

Does anyone disagree with me?

so why not simply restyle the headings to suit your design.

Heading elements are not simply "spider fodder", they are structural elements for ALL user agents, in particular screen readers and other assistive devices. That is why you should be using them!

The people who use h1 tags are the ones who know how to properly structure a document

The only H1's I use are in the title, the rest for me are H3 and H4 for breaking up my articles.

I usually only use H1 tags. Occasionaly, I will use H2 to break up sections of an article but generally just H1 Tags.

What I feel is that you must use H1 tag on each page of your site, as Google generate quick links to your site. This links are automatically added by Google and normally the link archer comes out from the H1 title of each page (not always).
Any way Google recommends the webmasters to make accurate sites and these ones will rank better because everything counts.

Ill make my second post onn here to say great reply!

I work with a blind person in my office and she uses screen readers, I didnt ever bother with using proper code in the format that I was supposed to, until I started to work with this lady!

But on SEO terms they are also fantastic tags to use

the following code is something you really can use for bots because ppl can't see the text that you put in - though, I'm not encouraging this practice - I'm just saying you can manipulate the h1 tag:

<h1 style="margin-bottom: 1px; line-height: 100%; font: normal; font-size: 6px; letter-spacing: 0; vertical-align: text-bottom; color:#e4ddd0;">

The use of tags will depend on one's own creativity.

Its would depend on onces choice on what font one wants and clients requirement.

no.

a page should be structured so the most important part is an H1 (which in a normal document comes first and tells you what you can expect to read about) then according to the hierarchy of importance it is further subdivided into sections with headings in order of importance and therefore weight.

the font you want is governed by what you define youer headings as in your css and what is available on the users' systems

From my experience H1 matching the TITLE really helps Google understand your page.

You should, if you're SEOing a page, ALWAYS use as many of the semantic markup in HTML as you can. So not only using H1 - H6, also using P for paragraphs, STRONG instead of B, ALT attributes for your images, navigation placed in UL, OL used for ordered information etc etc.

By placing your keywords in these semantic tags you give Google a much better chance of thoroughly understand your page. If you're not using them, you're wasting an opportunity.
