Google SEO guide is the best to start with. Ask questions if you have any as you read that.

To break it down:

SEO is the process of optimising your pages so Google understands the content of your page. This is putting keywords in the right places: TITLE, META Description, H1 - H6, P, STRONG and in the ALT attributes of your images.

That's SEO. That gets Google understanding your content. Next, to ensure rankings, you need to build backlinks with your keywords in the anchor text.

Hope this gives you a good start. If you have specific questions, just ask.

MSN also has a guide for search engine optimization, google it. Googles guide is real good but you should read over both to get a balance.

There is only one way to really learn about optimising and that is to just do it. HOWEVER:

Following the prevailing wisdom blindly will NOT teach you anything.

Try things and make your own judgement. Things that appear to work you should experiment more with, things that don't seem to work should be adapted and altered to se why.

Blind faith in what the "experts" say is NOT the way to go.

Unfortunately the majority of "SEO" forums are overrun with "experts" who would have a difficult time spelling "SEO" never mind actually saying something useful!!!

if i would you, i wouldn't worry much about the word "SEO" much. try to build small network of ppl & see if you can each other out. Linkable content or tool is good way to get backlinks. I am not huge friend of article directories, however social media works. now go figure stuff!

youtube will be your best bet to learn things. don't listen to some spammy videos which wants to sell you anything(i mean tool/services)

I am more into off-page optimization and most of the info I have is from forums. The problem is the information overload with so many people saying so many different things. Its quite confusing at times. I now know there are many ways to link building / getting back links. What I don't know yet is how to figure out which method has been more effective??

So I suggest that you find out about SEO at this forum, and then use it how you feel it suits you and your website. Don't blindly do everything that everyone says.

What I can say for sure is that learning and doing SEO will be an ongoing process.
